Skin Tags
Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are small, benign, flesh-colored growths that hang off the skin. They are composed of loose collagen fibers and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Skin tags are typically found in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and under the breasts.
Skin tags are common and can occur in both men and women, especially with age. They are more prevalent in people who are overweight or have diabetes, and there may be a genetic predisposition to developing them. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also increase the likelihood of developing skin tags.
While skin tags are harmless and usually painless, they can be a cosmetic concern or become irritated by clothing or jewelry. In such cases, or if there is uncertainty about the nature of the growth, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
Diagnosis of skin tags is typically straightforward and can be done through a visual examination. They have a characteristic appearance and are often attached to the skin by a small stalk. Skin tags differ from moles and other skin lesions in their loose, soft nature and are generally not a sign of a more serious underlying condition.
For removal, several options are available, including cryotherapy (freezing), cauterization (burning), ligation (tying off with a thread), or surgical removal. Over-the-counter solutions are also available, but it’s essential to use these with caution, especially in sensitive areas like the eyelids.
While skin tags may not be preventable, maintaining a healthy weight and managing blood sugar levels might reduce the risk of developing them. As with any skin changes, it’s a good idea to monitor skin tags for any changes in size, color, or shape and consult a healthcare professional if any changes occur.
