What types of lesion can I have removed?

  • Moles
  • Cysts
  • Lipomas
  • Skin Tags
  • Keratoses
  • Warts

How many lesions can I have removed in one session?

Each appointment takes up to 30 minutes, which will include a short consultation and the procedure. The doctor will remove as many lesions as is deemed safe and appropriate in the time allowed.

If a longer appointment is required to safely remove your lesions, this is charged at 15-minute increments.

Why can’t I have my skin lesion removed on the NHS?

If you have a skin lesion that needs to be removed to treat a health condition, such as skin cancer, it will be done on the NHS. If the lesion is in a place where it’s likely to get damaged, such as where you shave, it may be removed on the NHS to avoid irritating or causing further harm to it. However, if you want a lesion removing for other reasons, the NHS may not cover this cost.

Do you remove cancerous lesions?

The removal of cancerous lesions is covered by the NHS. Your GP should refer you to a consultant dermatologist within the NHS. However, in the unlikely event that you have a lesion removed under our service and the biopsy returns abnormal cells, we will refer you back to your GP who can advise you of the need of any further treatment under the NHS.

Do you check my lesions for signs of cancer?

Our specialists will send your excised lesion to a laboratory if they deem this appropriate. This is included in the cost of the service. We will let you know the results of the analysis as soon as we receive them.

What happens before the appointment?

Once an appointment has been booked we will send you confirmation together with a consent form which you should read but which you do not need to sign until you are certain you wish to proceed with the removal of your lesion following the consultation.

What happens during the consultation?

Your appointment includes a consultation with the doctor followed by the procedure. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss your general health and current medication. The doctor will then explain the procedure, whether or not it will involve stitches and discuss any likelihood of recurrence and scarring.

The Procedure:

How long does the procedure take?

Will I be anaesthetised for the procedure?

The surgical treatment is relatively simple and requires only local anaesthetic. You will be awake throughout your procedure and can ask questions while it is taking place if you wish. You will feel an initial sting from the local anaesthetic injection and the anaesthetic will wear off after a few hours.

What happens after the appointment?

The doctor will provide advice on post-operative wound care and also on whether, where and when to make an appointment for the removal of any stitches.

A copy of your Discharge Notes will be emailed to you. You can then send these on to your GP to update your medical records should you wish to do so.

Will the procedure leave a scar?

There may be a scar once the wound has healed; the degree of scarring depends on your age, where the lesion is and what surgery technique was used.

Most scars will be pale but occasionally they can become pigmented or darkened. Scars will usually fade over time.

Download a copy of our Post-Operative Wound Care Advice.

What is the risk of recurrence?

There is a very small risk that the lesion may return after treatment. This can occur with any lesion but is most common with epidermal or sebaceous cysts, warts, skin tags and lipomas. This will be discussed during the consultation.

What if I am not happy with the procedure after it has been carried out?

If, for any reason you are not happy with the outcome of your surgical procedure, you should not hesitate to contact us on either the Patient Line (0333 990 1860) or by email at info@clinicaloptions.co.uk.
