Cysts

Skin cysts are noncancerous, closed pockets of tissue that can be filled with fluid, pus, or other material. They are commonly found on the skin and can develop due to various reasons, including blocked sebaceous glands, infections, or around foreign bodies, like earrings. Unlike moles, skin cysts are typically found beneath the skin and can feel like large peas under the surface.

Epidermoid cysts and sebaceous cysts are among the most common types. Epidermoid cysts develop from the epidermis and are often found on the face, neck, and trunk. They’re slow-growing and are often painless. Sebaceous cysts, which are less common, arise from the glands that secrete oily matter that lubricates hair and skin.

Cysts can vary in size, and they are generally smooth to the touch and roll under the skin when pressed. They can be unsightly but are usually harmless. However, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to swelling, redness, and pain. In some cases, a cyst will burst, causing a boil-like sore.

It’s essential to avoid popping or squeezing a cyst, as this can lead to infection and scarring. Most small cysts are not painful and are best left alone. If a cyst becomes bothersome or persists, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

For symptomatic cysts, treatment options include drainage or removal. Drainage involves puncturing the cyst and squeezing out the material. Surgical removal is more extensive and may be required if a cyst is recurrent, bothersome, or suspected of being malignant.

Regular monitoring of cysts is crucial, especially for changes in size, color, or pain, which should prompt medical evaluation. While most skin cysts are benign, they can occasionally develop into cancer, making it essential to consult with a dermatologist for any concerns.
